On Launching a Fund

I am an engineer, an operator, a growth expert and a successful business consultant. Selected by AngelList for their Early Access Program, as of January 1, 2021 I will also be the General Partner of a rolling fund, which is an innovative investment vehicle and the perfect opportunity for me to leverage my expertise and network. I believe in building things quickly and publicly and this fund will be no different.

My experience speaks for itself. In the early 2000s, I was responsible for hitting the sales target within critical business units of Fortune 100 companies, consistently delivering superior results. Starting in 2010, I took over management of revenue growth at a string of four high-profile startups, putting each of them on a trajectory for success. My career has run the gamut—I have been the first business hire at a new venture and I have managed teams of over 200 people. I have also helped to raise over $100 million in venture funding from top-tier funds and strategic investors.

I wrote my first angel investment check in 2012. Since then, I've co-invested with leaders like Arjun Arora, Geoff Entress, and Andy Palmer. I've also co-invested with funds like Vegas Tech Fund, Greycroft, Google Ventures, Golden Ventures, Maveron, and MHS Capital. First and foremost, I'm a builder. Throughout my career and particularly in my consulting practice, I’ve spent a lot of time with founders. In fact, I've partnered with over 100 founders since 2017, helping them to obtain product-market-fit and go-to-market-fit. People have said some nice things about me. Since 2018, I've helped a number of founders and operators who have had prior success figure out their next act as consultants. I've created new frameworks and trained founders on the critical components of realizing their vision. In 2020, I was selected to be a Venture Partner with NextGen Venture Partners and have supported multiple portfolio company founders.

My background gives me access to high-quality companies from around the world, with a network that spans Silicon Valley and other tech hotspots throughout the U.S. in addition to Canada and India.  I have a large and highly engaged social media following, which is growing at 20% MoM.

Founders want me involved in their businesses because they know that I bring more than just capital to the table. My hyper-tactical guidance and the family of consultants that I have trained are strategic assets that can accelerate growth and provide unparalleled connections to the companies in which I invest.

My focus is on early stage companies and my conviction is that, for such ventures, the founding team is the single most important determinant of success. Accordingly, I am open to any category of startup, although I am particularly interested in the categories I understand best, which are B2B SaaS and DTC brands. I am also passionate about health & human performance, sales tools, and the future of work.

Learning about the founding team is a huge part of how I screen deals, and I will be looking for founders who demonstrate:

  • deep understanding of their space
  • capacity to learn and improve
  • belief and conviction
  • operational excellence
  • proof of work (at minimum, a portfolio of tinkering)
  • community around their work, product, business
  • strong communication skills

I'd love feedback

If you don't know me well and want to get a better understanding of how I think, I'd recommend this podcast. I also made a voice note on where VC has been, where it's going, and why I'm positioned well for success.
