The power of the informational interview

"I'll find out."

I often don't know the answer, but I'm resourceful so I say this a lot.

As an intern or early stage employee I would always take the opportunity to reach out to senior leaders in and learn what I could. I did this both at Boeing and Johnson Controls.

When I ran my second startup in 2010 and my responsibilities organically expanded as the business grew, I had to find a way to learn what I didn't know.

I turned to Linkedin and for any functional area I wanted to learn about I emailed the top leaders, explained my situation, and asked for help.

Many people didn't respond. No one outright said no. And anywhere from six to twelve people said yes.

If you are learning something new and have exhausted the blogs and podcasts, or learn through interview reach out to people who have been there and done it.

It's an efficient way to learn.
